The concert organist, pianist and composer Dr. Gottfried Thore Drywa studied organ and piano with Ben van Oosten, Marie-Claire Alain and Susan Landale, as well as composition and musicology with, among others, Frank Michael Beyer and Isabel Mundry, in Rotterdam, Paris and Zurich.

His participation in international competitions and masterclasses with Daniel Roth, Michael Radulescu, Jean Guillou, Olivier Latry and Helmut Lachenmann complemented this period of study.

As a performer, he commands an extensive repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the present day, with numerous concerts in Germany and abroad, alongside recordings for CD and radio.

He also performs as an improviser with other instrumentalists. A further focus of his work is the transcription of orchestral works for organ, including the symphonies and symphonic poems of Jean Sibelius, as well as works by Mozart, Liszt, Nielsen and Mendelssohn.

Gottfried Thore Drywa is honorary titular organist of the Wolf organ at the Lutherkirche in Plauen.

In 1904, the court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer built this instrument for the then Viktoria-Louise School in Berlin. It was created during the same period in which Sauer was also working on the famous organ of Berlin Cathedral.

Until 1938, the assembly hall hosted numerous concerts. The building later accommodated the capital’s conservatory for a time, while young students, established musicians and members of the Berlin Philharmonic used the hall for rehearsals and performances.

The building and the organ survived the Second World War largely unharmed. Today, the Sauer organ is regarded as Berlin’s last historic school organ that remains playable.

HISTORICAL RESTORATION

A project of reconstruction and preservation.

More than one hundred years of use have left the instrument with considerable technical deficiencies. Repairs were often carried out provisionally and according to the funds available. Between 2004 and 2007, the organ was even unplayable for several years.

The proposed restoration aims at a faithful and sustainable return to the 1904 state. This includes the restoration of the technical system, the reconstruction of the original disposition, a historically appropriate pneumatic action and the reconstruction of the former Art Nouveau case with its original façade pipe proportions.

A substantial amount of historical pipework remains. The comparison between the original 1904 disposition and the present state shows both the continuity of the instrument and the changes that occurred during the twentieth century.

HISTORICAL PIPEWORK

Four layers of history.

Eight of the twelve stops are preserved almost in their original form. In addition, many historical pipes were reused in other stops and a number of older foreign pipes remain in the instrument.

Original stock. Principal 8′, Octave 4′, Spitzflöte 8′, Gedackt 8′, Subbaß 16′ and Violon 8′.
Altered original stock. Bourdon 8′ and Feinflöte 4′. Many pipes in the Bourdon still carry the inscription “Bourdon 16′”; the Feinflöte contains pipes from a Vox céleste 8′.
New pipes from the 1950s. Gemshorn 2′, Principal 2′ and Quinte 1⅓′.
Historical foreign pipes. Older surviving pipes from other instruments, mostly used as additions in the upper registers of original stops.

THE ORGAN CASE

Restoring the visual identity of the instrument.

The removal of the original Jugendstil case remains difficult to understand from the perspective of historical preservation. A 1954 assessment confirms that the case was still standing at that time; stylistic considerations appear to have played a greater role in its removal than structural necessity.

The present case, erected in 1957, was built with inferior materials and has suffered considerable damage. The relocation of the console in 1993 created an additional imbalance between old and new woodwork. The former console position was subsequently closed in a provisional manner.

CONSOLE AND FAÇADE

Position, proportion and historical evidence.

In 1957, an approximately 80-centimetre-high platform was built around the organ. The historic case, pulpit and stairways to the console were removed. The new console was placed halfway between its original position and the floor.

In 1993, after the platform had been removed, the console was finally moved to the floor. The resulting gap in the case was closed, further separating the present appearance from the original instrument.

Historical photographs also show that the façade pipes no longer correspond to the original arrangement. The number of visible pipes was reduced from twenty-one to nineteen, and the original lengths were altered. The historical state therefore remains the essential reference for a future reconstruction.

QVMP DIGITAL PROJECT · 2020

The Hauptwerk sample set.

In October 2020, QVMP created a digital Hauptwerk sample set of the Sauer organ. Every individual note of every individual stop was recorded in three stereo channels. The result makes it possible to experience the instrument virtually from different distances within the room and at the console.

The virtual reconstruction also makes the historic school organ available for digital teaching. Students can play the instrument at home on a Hauptwerk console or MIDI keyboard, even without direct access to the assembly hall.

At the same time, the sample set documents the present condition of every single pipe. This creates valuable material for the future restoration and for the continued musical and educational life of the Sauer organ.
