Music does not belong to institutions. It does not require the sanction of authority, the solemnity of tradition, or the approval of those who presume to determine its value. Music belongs, first and foremost, to those who create it, those who perform it, and those who listen.

It is in this spirit that Quatre Visages Music Production pays homage to the French composer Darius Milhaud (1892–1974), whose artistic imagination embraced a remarkable freedom of expression.

For Milhaud, music was never confined to a single aesthetic doctrine. His world accommodated the concert hall and the street, the sophistication of counterpoint and the immediacy of popular melody, the intellectual and the spontaneous, the serious and the playful. He found inspiration in everyday life, in the sounds and rhythms of distant cultures, in jazz, in the theatre, and in the inexhaustible variety of human experience.

What distinguished this attitude was not a rejection of musical tradition, but an independence from its authority. Complexity did not have to announce itself through solemnity. Simplicity was not synonymous with superficiality. Artistic seriousness did not exclude pleasure, humour, or lightness.

Music could be profound without becoming solemn, sophisticated without becoming inaccessible, and innovative without demanding allegiance to a school or doctrine.

This conviction lies at the heart of Quatre Visages.

We believe that musical creation and interpretation must remain independent: independent of commercial hierarchies, institutional expectations, fashionable orthodoxies, and the increasingly standardised aesthetics of the international recording industry.

The purpose of an independent label is not merely to produce recordings outside the structures of the major companies. Independence must mean something more fundamental: the freedom to conceive, to question, to experiment, to reinterpret, and to bring new artistic ideas into existence.

We do not regard the great repertoire as an untouchable monument, nor the recording as a definitive statement. Every performance is an act of discovery. Every transcription opens another perspective. Every recording is an invitation to listen anew.

Quatre Visages therefore understands music production as an artistic undertaking in its own right. The choice of repertoire, the interpretation, the instrument, the acoustical space, the recording, and its presentation are not separate stages of an industrial process. They form a single creative conception.

We have no ambition to imitate the monumental machinery of the major recording labels, nor to reproduce the hierarchies through which musical value is so often presented to the public.

Our ambition is at once simpler and more demanding: to return music to the people — not by diminishing its artistic substance, but by liberating it from unnecessary conventions.

In this sense, the homage to Darius Milhaud is more than a reference to a composer. It is an acknowledgement of a musical attitude: curious rather than doctrinaire, inventive rather than imitative, open rather than exclusive.
